About this age calculator

This age calculator shows exactly how much time has passed between your birth date and a chosen target date. The result is broken down into calendar years, months and days, and also shown as totals in weeks, hours, minutes and seconds. You also see how many days remain until your next birthday.

Months, weeks and leap years

Age = Target date − Birth date. We use calendar-based calculations: if needed, days are borrowed from the previous month before normalizing months and years. Days are counted as full calendar days between both dates.

Why this is useful

How the year-month-day breakdown works

The calculator uses a calendar-based algorithm. It first counts full years from the birth date to the target date, then remaining full calendar months, then remaining days. When the target day falls earlier in the month than the birth day, the calculator borrows the exact number of days from the previous month before normalizing. This matches the natural way age is described: you are not a month older until the same day of the month comes around again.

Totals in weeks, hours, minutes, and seconds are then derived from the exact count of calendar days between the two dates, using 24-hour days throughout.

Worked example

Someone born on January 1, 2000 reaches their 25th birthday on January 1, 2025:

  • Age: 25 years, 0 months, 0 days
  • Total days: 9,132 (18 regular years × 365 + 7 leap years × 366, with leap years in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024)
  • Weeks: 1,304 weeks and 4 days
  • Hours: 219,168 hours
  • Minutes: 13,150,080 minutes

For a non-anniversary date the year-month-day output is more revealing. Born March 15, 1990, target October 20, 2025: result is 35 years, 7 months, and 5 days.

How leap years are handled

A leap year adds one extra day (February 29) every 4 years, with exceptions for some century years. The calculator automatically includes every leap day that falls between the birth date and the target date when computing total days. In the example above, the 7 leap days account for the difference between 9,132 total days and the 9,125 days you would get by ignoring them.

Leap years do not affect the year-month-day output unless the birth date is February 29. In that case the calculator treats March 1 as the effective birthday in non-leap years.

Total units: weeks, hours, minutes, and seconds

All unit totals are derived from the exact number of calendar days:

  • Weeks: total days ÷ 7, with remaining days shown separately.
  • Hours: total days × 24.
  • Minutes: total hours × 60.
  • Seconds: total minutes × 60.

These totals count from midnight on the birth date to midnight on the target date. They do not include the actual time of birth, since only dates are entered.

When to use this calculator

  • Age on a deadline: confirm how old you will be on a contract start date, exam day, or application deadline.
  • Eligibility checks: verify whether someone meets a minimum age requirement for employment, a driving licence, retirement benefits, or other entitlements.
  • Personal milestones: find out how many days, weeks, or hours you have been alive for a birthday celebration or anniversary.
  • Planning ahead: enter a future date to see your age at retirement, a child's age at a school milestone, or the time remaining to any life event.

Birthday countdown explained

Below the main result the calculator shows the number of days remaining until your next birthday, counted from the target date. If the target date is your exact birthday the countdown resets to 365 or 366 days depending on whether the following birthday year is a leap year. The countdown finds the next occurrence of your birth month and day on or after the target date.

Tips and notes

  • Target dates before the birth date are blocked.
  • Future dates are allowed to calculate a future age in advance.
  • Calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days, so the day count per month is not fixed.
  • Weeks × 7 will not always equal the total day count exactly, since a partial week is shown separately.
  • The calculator uses dates only, not times of birth. Hours and smaller units count from midnight.
